Königstein Fortress the "Saxon Bastille", is the largest hilltop fortress in Germany close to Dresden on the left bank of the River Elbe. It towers 240 m (750 ft) above the Elbe Valley and is one of the largest hilltop fortifications in Europe.
The fortress has over 50 buildings, some over 400 years old, which bear witness to the military and civilian life as a fortress. In the centre of the site is a 152 meter deep well, which is the deepest in Saxony and second deepest well in Europe.
The S-Bahn train S1 runs twice per hour from Dresden (and Meissen) to Königstein. Königstein is 40 minutes from Dresden. Access to the fortress is possible via a modern panorama elevator that replaced the original sixteenth-century hoist or via the original very steep path.
